Freelux RDBS Plug

Purpose of the product
The Smart Load Switch Plug is intended to support Demand Response programs of electric utility
companies. A plug & play solution can be complementary to the wired load switches which need an
installer before operation. Although the loads of mains outlet sockets in general are lower than the
wired ones, it will contribute to lowering the peak load at the grid because the ease of use makes the
related number of connected appliances much higher with substantial effect.
Directions
Plug the ECO302-NA in the wall outlet socket and plug the
appliance into the ECO302-NA. The Smart Load Switch Plug
is now ready for use. When a FM/RDS radio signal is
received and decoded the Smart Load Plug, it will cut the
power to the appliance. A following FM/RDS signal will
switch the power back on again.
RDS (Radio Data System) or RBDS (Radio Broadcast Data
System) is a standardised communications protocol for
embedding small amounts of digital information in
conventional FM radio broadcasts. The RBDS system
standardises several types of information transmitted, such as
time, station identification, program information and
customized codes like control settings.
Options
To determine actual usage of the Smart Load Switch Plug, a power load registration and clock can be
added as an extra feature. The readout can be done through a USB port or read out via a radio signal to
a router hub or PC
Or: a custom design like build-in ZigBee or WiFi
Protocol messages
The definition of the RBDS messages are defined by the demand response party or utility
The Freelux RDS Plug is a unique way to turn devices and appliances on and off using a Radio Data Signal. Utility companies in the USA, Australia and New Zealand already use this functionality in a hard-wired solution to turn devices and appliances on and off during peak hours.
The RDS Plug enables utilities and Demand Response companies to target the office and residential applications. Consumers can install RDS Plug by themselves against low costs and will be rewarded when turn-off appliances like airco’s, heaters, freezers, fridges etc. during costly peak hours.
As more and more smart meters are installed, it will be only a matter of time before the consumer will be charged a significant premium for electricity use during these peak hours. Then the Freelux RDS Plug will be a retail product for consumers as well.
Retail price targeted at US$ 14,95.
